What I've been reading lately:
- The Power (and Peril) of Praising Your Kids -- New York Magazine - This link is three years old, but I only saw the article today. Summary: It's far healthier to praise your kids for working hard than for being smart.
- Is group studying more
effective?
- No, just the opposite. You'll remember less of what you learned in a study group than you would remember if you studied alone. For me, that's worth the tradeoff if the group helps me study more consistently.
- Harvard Senior's thesis acknowledged in Michael Lewis' "The Big
Short"
- Explaining why she took Ec 10, the class that set her on that path, she said "I thought maybe this would help me, like, learn to manage my money or something." Via Greg Mankiw.
- How To Identify Time Travelers Messing with History - Look for historical events that would have been notable, if only some highly improbable event had not occurred. Read the comic for a good example. Fun!
- How much do teachers improve with
experience?
- They don't. At least, not as measured by student evaluations.
- Apple's multitouch lawsuit is both dumb and dangerous. - Slate Magazine - Farhad Manjoo gives a good summary of what's broken about patent law, as applied to the software industry.
- Don't follow Tim Burton down this rabbit hole. - Slate Magazine - I for one am kind of tired movies starring Johnny Depp in a velvet suit.
